Major headaches preparing for the upcoming trip to Italy. It turns out I was doing the wrong thing in my preparation for the duo recital with Ilton Wjuniski. He and I are doing four of the six-part glosados by Cabezon as duets. He's playing lines 1, 3 and 5 on the clavichord, and I'm playing 2, 4 and 6 on the vihuela. But I made the mistake of not realizing just how extensively Cabezon rewrote the counterpoint of the vocal originals. So in the arrangements I've been working on, I've based my choice of lines on the vocal originals, rather than on Cabezon's lines, which would have been the obvious thing to do (had I thought it through properly). So I'm going to have to redo quite a lot of the preparation, now that Ilton has faxed me the original Cabezon print, where it's perfectly clear how the six lines are distributed. Meanwhile, just when I don't need it, there's trouble receiving faxes here. Poor Ilton has had to send some of the pages three times! If none of this makes any sense, don't worry. Picture of the day: me with my four lute students at the Cambridge Early Music Summer Schools a few weeks ago.
